Portable
Important and valuable thing to be able to do. I will post up more of my portable information, links and tips shortly. Here are the basic requirements…
Going portable
- Install Portable Firefox on the storage device so you can have easy access to your RSS feeds, links, blog in your pocket. The following extensions will provide added functionality and security.
- Scribefire Blog editor extension. Very handy
- Customize Google Search anonymously, block advertisements, enhanced searching and more
- NoScript Block (or allow) scripts from web sites. Most pop up advertising is script based. Allow sites you trust as needed
- QuickProxy Button to change the browser web proxy. Different network locations will have different proxy servers so you need to have the correct settings. At home you don’t, so this little button allows you to switch the setting off easily without going into the browser preferences.
- You can’t forget del.ico.us bookmarks plugin (from Yahoo) this makes it very simple to add, edit and browse your del.icio.us bookmarks. You get a pop up dialogue box when saving with all of your tags and nework to choose from and your del.icio.us bookmarks are viewable and searchable through the bookmarks sidebar. Nice.
Extras
The following extras will help to make the experience more enjoyable for you. These apps can be added to your portable storage device as well.
- Portable Audacity Is the portable version of the popular open source Audacity application. Features include audio recording, editing, mixing and analysis. Surprisingly easy to use.
- MPlayer portable
- Skype a Skype account and a headset
- A password storage application such as KeePass. See the “first steps tutorial” to help you get started.
If you running WinXP and would prefer to download a “suite” of applications (rather than roll your own) head to Portable Apps and download one of their packages. With Portable OpenOffice the download is 113Mb without it’s 35Mb. I have it on my memory stick and it runs perfectly. Makes it very easy for me to jump onto a managed XP or Vista machine and have all my stuff at my fingertips
If you’re an OSX person there isn’t a “suite” interface quite as elegant as Portable Apps but all your application needs are covered by FreeSMUG.
